Grouping on Basis of Magnetic Behaviour

Grouping of materials on the basis of magnetic behaviour  :

Materials like metals show magnetic behaviour. Magnetism is a property of an object by which it can attract or repel the other metal substances. Materials that show the property of magnetism are called as magnetic materials and those materials which do not show this property are called as non magnetic materials.

Magnets can also be classified into man made or natural magnets on the basis of there occurence :

Natural magnets : They are found in nature like magnetite.

Man - made Magnets  : They are made by  man, generally from iron, nickel, cobalt.

Magnetic materials can also  be classified in to paramagnetic, diamagnetic and ferromagnetic. This classification is done by placing materials in magnetic field.

Diamagnetic materials : Materials that do not get magnetised when placed in magnetic field. For eg : Gold, water and Mercury.

Paramagnetic materials  : These materials get magnetised  to some extend when placed in magnetic field. Eg : Liquid sodium, oxygen and platinum etc.

Ferromagnetic materials  :These material get strongly magnetised when placed in magnetic field. They remain magnetised for some time even after the removal of magnetic field. For eg : iron, cobalt, nickel etc.
